What If My Grades Put My Eligibility to Play at Risk?

Find out your exact rule now, because it differs by school, league and country. Ask your coach or athletic director when grades are checked. Get help early, before final grades post. If you fall short, ask about an appeal straight away, because deadlines can be short.
The answer
- Get your rule in writing. Schools, leagues and countries set different minimums. Ask your coach, athletic director or school office what yours is and when it is checked.
- Know what the rules can look like. One US university requires a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, checked when final grades post. NCAA Division I schools also require a set number of credit hours each term. Yours may be different.
- Check where you stand before the end of term. Ask each teacher or lecturer how your grade looks while there is still time to change it.
- Ask for help the moment a grade slips. Talk to your teacher, a tutor or your school's study support, and plan study blocks around training.
- If you fall short, ask straight away whether you can appeal. At that university the appeal is in writing, within two weeks of the end of term. It explains what went wrong and how you will get back into good standing. Check your own deadline.
- Ask what happened, what was in your control, what you learned and what the next action is. Then act on the answer this term.
