How is a sports scholarship in Europe different from one in the US?

In the US, NCAA Division I and II schools give athletics scholarships, and Division III gives none. One body sets the eligibility rules. In Europe the rules are set by each country and university, and much of the help is study flexibility, not money. In both, check the official page.

The answer

  1. United States: NCAA Division I and II schools award athletics scholarships. Division III schools do not offer athletics scholarships. The NCAA says only about 2% of high school athletes earn one, and most scholarships are partial.
  2. An international athlete in the US must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. For Division I the page lists 16 core courses, a minimum 2.3 core GPA, and a final transcript from year nine with a certified English translation and proof of graduation. Division II lists 2.2.
  3. Europe: there is no single system. The UK and Ireland have university sports scholarships. Stirling accepts all nationalities and offers up to £5,000 a year. DCU has scholarships and a CAO points concession.
  4. In Germany, the Netherlands and Spain the pages I read describe support linked to each country's national sports system: flexible study, services and reserved places. Whether an international athlete can use them is for the university to say.
  5. In both places, ask who can apply, what it pays, the deadline and the sport criteria before you decide.
  6. Plan early. Eligibility checks, transcripts and applications take time.
