How Do I Take Good Notes in Class as a Student-Athlete?
Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX
Preview the reading before class. In class, write main points, keywords and questions, not every word. Within a day or two, review your notes, fill the gaps and list what to ask your teacher. Label every page with the class and date so notes are easy to find.
The answer
- Before class, preview the reading and check the syllabus to see what matters most.
- Label each page with the class name and date, and keep each class's notes together in order.
- In class, write the main points instead of copying everything. Use short phrases, abbreviations and a consistent layout.
- Mark keywords, names, dates and anything confusing so you can follow up later.
- Watch for what the teacher stresses: introductions, summaries, repeated ideas and emphasis.
- Within a day or two, review your notes, fill the gaps and note what you still do not understand.
- Book that review as a named block in your calendar, for example "Maths notes, 7:00 to 7:15", not "when I have time".
- Use the gaps in your week, such as 15 to 20 minutes on the bus or before practice.
