How do I stop being so hard on myself after mistakes?
Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX
One mistake does not have to become the next. Ask four questions: what happened, what was in my control, what did I learn, and what is my next action. Then go back to your process goal. Be kind to yourself. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a teammate.
The answer
- Say what happened in plain facts. No labels like "useless".
- Ask: what was in my control?
- Ask: what did I learn?
- Ask: what is the next action? Then do it.
- Go back to your process goal.
- Be kind to yourself. Speak to yourself like you would to a teammate who made the same mistake.
If you feel low about mistakes most days, talk to someone you trust, such as a parent, a guardian or a coach. You can also seek help from a qualified professional.
