How Do I Start a Gratitude Habit as an Athlete?
Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX
Keep it small. Write a few things you are grateful for on an index card, with one short mantra at the bottom. After training or a game, ask what you learned and what you were thankful for. Include sport and non-sport things. Refresh the card each month.
The answer
- Write why you play your sport. Gratitude is easier to find when you remember why you are there.
- Make a card. Write a few things you are grateful for, and one short mantra at the bottom. Keep it in your bag or on your phone.
- After training or a game, ask: what did I learn, and what am I most thankful for?
- Mix sport and non-sport things: a coach, a teammate, a teacher, a meal, a good night of rest.
- On a hard day, use your four questions: what happened, what was in my control, what did I learn, and what is my next action. Then name one thing that is still good.
- Refresh the card once a month. In your weekly check, glance at it.
- Be kind to yourself on days you forget. Start again the next day.
