How Do I Set Team Goals at the Start of the Season?

Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX

Review last season first, then set goals for the players and for yourself, with the steps to reach each one. Make some goals specific and measurable. Make sure every player knows their role and why it matters. Tell parents the goals before the season starts, and check in during it.

The answer

  1. Review last season and adjust for the new group of players.
  2. Set goals for the players and for yourself, and write down the steps to reach each one.
  3. Make some goals specific and measurable. Not every goal has to be.
  4. Add process goals the team controls, such as being on time and how you respond to mistakes. The result belongs partly to others; preparation, actions and response are yours.
  5. Help each player understand their role and why it matters.
  6. Include school. Stress academics, time management and a balanced life as team goals.
  7. Tell parents the expectations and goals before the season begins.
  8. Check in on the goals during the season and change or add goals as needed. After the season, review them with assistants, athletes and the team.
