How Do I Prepare for a Campus Visit With a College Coach?

Go in with written questions and run them past a trusted adult first. Ask what a typical training week looks like, how class and practice clashes are handled, and what decides where you would fit. Listen closely and ask follow-up questions. Show you take responsibility for sport and school.

The answer

  1. Write your questions down before the visit. Showing you are prepared helps.
  2. Keep the questions that sound like you. Drop any that feel forced.
  3. Run your list past a trusted adult. Asking for help early is part of leadership.
  4. Ask what a typical week of training looks like for a first-year athlete and for an older one, and ask to see a sample plan. Asking only about total volume suggests you do not see how training fits together.
  5. Ask how clashes between class and practice are handled. Show you will take responsibility, without suggesting you will often skip practice.
  6. Listen closely and ask a follow-up. A probing question teaches you more than the first question does.
