How Do I Manage the Family Schedule When My Children Play Different Sports?

Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX

Put every child's training, games and travel in one shared calendar. Ask coaches early about staggering practice days, share the driving with other parents and split who attends which event. Be honest about your time, energy and money, and use the off-season to rest. Include your children in those decisions.

The answer

  1. Put every fixed commitment in one shared calendar: practices, games, travel and meals.
  2. Ask coaches early whether practice days can be staggered, where possible.
  3. Split attendance between parents, and line up backup help when you are solo.
  4. Share the driving with other sports parents.
  5. Prepare meals and snacks ahead, and pack a sports bag with the essentials.
  6. Set honest limits on time, energy and money, and include your children in those decisions.
  7. Use the off-season to rest instead of signing up for something new.
