How Do I Learn My Team's Plays?

Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX

Study your plays like schoolwork. Book short named blocks, learn how your role fits the whole team plan, and review it often. Say the calls out loud at training. Ask older teammates when stuck. Expect it to take time, and be patient with yourself while it sinks in.

The answer

  1. Book study blocks with names, like "Plays, 7:00 to 7:45", not "when I have time".
  2. Keep each block timed. One structure to try is 50 minutes of work and a 10-minute break, and adjust it to suit you.
  3. Learn how your role fits the whole team plan, not only your own part.
  4. Review often. Short, regular reviews beat one long session.
  5. Say the calls and plays out loud at training. Communication starts with knowing the plan.
  6. Ask older teammates and your coach when you are stuck. Asking for help is not weakness.
  7. Expect it to take time. Be patient with yourself while it sinks in.
