How Do I Learn From Watching Better Athletes?

Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX

Watch one better athlete with one question in mind, such as how they set up before a skill. Try that one thing at your next training, then ask your coach if it suits you. Watching adds to practice and does not replace it. Keep what helps.

The answer

  1. Pick one athlete in your sport whose habits you respect. It can be a teammate or a pro. Watch them live or on video.
  2. Watch for one thing only, such as how they set up, move or reset after a mistake. Do not try to copy everything.
  3. Write what you saw in one line.
  4. Try it at your next training. Copy the technique or routine, and the good conduct too: how they handle wins, losses, coaches and officials.
  5. Ask for help. Ask the athlete or your coach one question about what you saw, and ask your coach whether it suits you.
  6. Keep what helps and drop what does not. Watching adds to practice and does not replace it.
