Recovery and Energy
How do I know if my athlete is burnt out or just tired?
Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX
Tired usually improves with rest. Burnout is a pattern that lasts for weeks, with signs such as lost enthusiasm, mood changes and tiredness that does not lift. Look for patterns over weeks, not one bad day. This answer is general, not medical, so talk to a doctor if you are worried.
The answer
- Ask how long. A few hard days is tiredness. Weeks of low energy and low interest is a pattern.
- Ask about enjoyment: "What part of it do you still like?"
- Watch for signs such as tiredness that does not lift, trouble sleeping, mood changes, losing interest, playing poorly, repeated injuries or aches.
- Look at the whole week for what is draining them: training load, school, sleep, pressure.
- Talk to your athlete and their coach about what would help.
- If signs last, or involve pain, appetite, weight or mood changes, see a doctor.
