How Do I Keep Competing in My Sport When I Start University?

Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX

Many universities offer more than scholarships. Ask about the elite athlete program at yours. Some offer flexible entry, early class selection, special consideration for assessments and leave for competition travel. Check who is eligible, ask early, and put your competitions and assessments in one calendar.

The answer

  1. Ask early. Search your university's name plus "elite athlete program", or contact its sport department.
  2. Check who is eligible. At UNSW, athletes are usually identified through a national sporting organisation list or a state institute, and others can apply for consideration.
  3. Look at what it offers. UNSW lists flexible entry with bonus points for school leavers, enrolment flexibility, cross-institution study and leave for travel. Western Sydney University lists early tutorial registration, special consideration for assessments, discounts and free gym access.
  4. Remember programs differ. These two are examples, not a rule for every university.
  5. Put competitions, assessments and travel in one calendar. Warn your lecturers and your coach early about heavy weeks.
  6. Ask the program what proof of your level they need, and ask for support before the system collapses. Asking for help is not weakness.
  7. Check the official page again each year. Details change.
