How Do I Give a Half-Time Talk When My Team Is Losing?

Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX

Stay calm and keep the tone positive. Name one or two things the team did well, then give two or three clear fixes for the next period. Keep it short so players can take it in. Finish with a message of belief in the team.

The answer

  1. Stay calm, whatever the scoreboard shows. A panicked or emotional talk can unsettle players, so keep your tone positive.
  2. Name what went well first: individual effort, good plays and teamwork, even if the performance was imperfect.
  3. Find the exact leak before you speak. Do not just ask for more effort; name the one or two areas to fix.
  4. Give clear, actionable instructions. Limit the talk to two or three key messages so players are not overwhelmed.
  5. Point players to what they can control in the next period, not the score. Pressure is a focus problem, not a character problem.
  6. End on a motivational note: express belief in the team and stress staying focused and working together.
