How Do I Choose a Safe Sports Club for My Child in Canada?

Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX

Check three things: that coaches hold National Coaching Certification Program training, that staff know first aid and concussion basics, and that the club is registered with its provincial sport organization. Know where to report a concern, and ask how coaches are screened. Parents should always seek professional advice if unsure.

The answer

  1. Ask whether coaches are certified through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). It covers topics such as lesson planning, safety and ethics.
  2. Ask whether staff and coaches know how to respond to emergencies, including first aid and sport-related injuries. Concussion awareness training is also recommended.
  3. Ask whether the club is registered with its provincial sport organization (PSO). One provincial sport organization (viaSport, British Columbia) says registered clubs have to meet sport-specific standards. Those typically include coach-to-athlete ratios, coach education, criminal record checks for coaches and insurance.
  4. Ask the club what screening it does and how it keeps children safe. A well-run club should welcome your questions.
  5. Know where to report. Sport Integrity Canada says sport participants have the right to train and compete in safe and supportive environments, and explains how to report maltreatment under the Canadian Safe Sport Program.
  6. Check your own province's rules. The article above is from British Columbia and dates from 2016.
  7. If you are unsure, ask your sport's governing body or a qualified sports professional. Parents can always seek professional advice.
