How Do I Become a More Coachable Athlete?

Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX

Being coachable means accepting constructive feedback, respecting your coaches and teammates, and keeping your effort steady. Ask what to work on, show the change in your next session, and stay adaptable when plans change. If you disagree, say so in a respectful, prepared conversation. Keep a positive attitude.

The answer

  1. Accept constructive feedback. Listen to the point first, then act on it.
  2. Ask your coach what to work on, then show the change in your next session. Following through after feedback is part of leadership.
  3. Keep your effort steady and be respectful to your coaches and teammates, including when things go wrong.
  4. Be willing to put the team first and stay adaptable when things do not go as you expected.
  5. Keep your body language positive after mistakes. Coaches notice the little things.
  6. If you disagree with your coach, do not stay silent. Use Fact, Feeling, Question: describe what happened, say how it affected you, and ask what to do next.
