How Do I Ask for a Recommendation Letter?
Rhema Adelaja · National Champion & 4x DUX
Choose someone who knows you well, then ask at least two weeks before the deadline. Ask for a positive letter and explain what it is for. Give them a list of your activities and accomplishments, and make the logistics easy. Do not expect to see the letter.
The answer
- Write a list of your activities and accomplishments. A full resume is not required.
- Choose someone who knows you well and can speak to the skills the program needs, for example a coach or teacher. They do not have to be the most senior person.
- Ask politely for a positive letter. It lets them decide whether they can write a strong one.
- Tell them what the letter is for so they can highlight the right qualities.
- Allow at least two weeks. A thoughtful letter takes effort.
- Make the logistics easy. Say how the letter should be sent: email, an online form, mail or a set format.
- Do not ask to see the letter. If you need it later, ask whether they can keep it on file.
- Asking is asking for support, so do it early, not the week it is due. Put the deadline on your calendar.
